Out with the old; in with the new

It's been a ton of fun and I've learned a lot of things along the way, but the time has come for me to step down from GV. The latest Google Voice update adds the ability to use other Google (not just GMail) accounts, which was the missing "killer feature". As such, I don't see much reason to keep maintaining my GV application. I don't have the time any more to re-implement their API, and I feel that users would be better served by the official application.

Later today or early this week I'll be pushing one final update to GV which includes a patch by Mark Guppy. If anyone else wants functionality added to this app, feel free to write a patch and email it to me. If the installed user base falls sufficiently low, I'll pull it from Market (though updates can always be found here: GV Downloads.

On to happier topics: I've released an app that I've been working on for a while now: Magnatune - an app that lets you browse the entire Magnatune.com collection from your phone. There is also a RESTful API (which the client is based on) that I will be exposing later, in case you want to write an app for another platform (or even Android). Please drop me a line if you have any feedback; I'd love to hear it!

Comments

Please continue your work. I am sure we can pull in donations for each new specific feature.

GV is still the best Google Voice app out there. It's the only one that makes calls through the phone line. It'll be a sad day for me when it stops working.

Another vote (pleading) to keep GV alive. The official app does not dial out to my personal # (free to me). It instead dials out to some other access # (not free to me). I love GV!

Just to clarify--the official application does in fact use the voice line; it's not VoIP or anything like that.

To clarify my comment, GV is the only one that uses your actual google voice number instead of the strange number google uses that changes all the time.

I second that vote... I switched to GV since I can add my googlevoice number to myfaves... Please keep it up, even if you fall behind on other features.. I am a starving student, and myfaves + GV has been my salvation! :D

(I posted on an older blog entry, just putting it here so it's not missed)

Thank you for a great little app!

I would _love_ the ability to add a "whitelist" of numbers to always call directly (not via Google Voice). That way, I can call my myFaves directly, and use google voice for everything else. Right now, I have to have it prompt me for each call to make any use of myFaves.

This would be very useful for people with business phones. Make work calls "normally" and then personal calls via GV. Makes it easy to keep your phone number worlds segregated.

If it's hard to use the labels automatically, I'd be happy enough to enter them manually or put them in a text file on the SD card.

The official Google Voice app needs an active data connection to make phone calls. GV is the only app that as said above uses your personal google voice line to make calls. I like the easy access to all my contacts via GV. Otherwise, I would be forced to edit all my contacts to dial my google voice number.....ugh!

It would definitely be nice to keep this alive! As a Canadian that uses Google Voice to keep in touch with my American friends, I was shocked after installing the official Google App that I had a $25 long distance charge. I never had it when I used G1 Central or your GV app.

Thanks for the feedback! If you have any other comments, please don't hesitate to let me know. Cheers!

lol @ that last comment, good sense of humor.

I'm new in the Android game and I just gotta say that I love this app when it works well. I hope someone patches it

Please find a way to keep this going. I think this has been your best app and it's the best google voice app. I like the call back feature, as it saves me money. It's nice it uses your google voice number for the call receiver to see. We need an independent person working on ways to use google voice, otherwise the corporations will dictate which features users get rather than users talking to developers. Please keep it going and don't let your pioneering spirit go instinct! Thanks!
